Shiatsu Pillows: What Those Nodes Are Doing
A shiatsu massage pillow contains rotating nodes — usually four or eight — that press and circle rather than vibrate. Understanding the motion helps you position the unit properly.
Direction changes are deliberate
Most units reverse rotation every minute or so. That is intentional: it works the tissue from both directions instead of pushing it one way for the whole session.
Position, then relax
The pillow should sit against the muscle with your own body weight providing the pressure. Pressing the unit hard into your neck with your hands defeats the design and usually causes soreness.
Heat is a comfort feature
The warmth in these units is gentle by design. It makes the session more pleasant and the tissue more willing; it is not a therapeutic heat treatment.
